The global biodiversity challenge – CBD, Post2020, IPBES (Module – Inspiring The Minds)

Reviews 0 (0 Reviews)

Course Overview

Climate change is among the greatest threats to global biodiversity and the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) sixth assessment report estimated that about half of the world’s populations are at risk resulting from a warming planet. The decline of global diversity also represents a challenge on its own and could erode the resilience necessary for adapting to change. In this module, we will work with the crises of biodiversity loss, explore the challenges by examining global assessments from IPCC, CBD, Post2020, IPBES, and investigate the main international environmental policies addressing these challenges.

We explore the decline in biological diversity and its underlying drivers, including the Kunming-Montreal agreement for addressing these challenges.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the key concepts and ideas underlying the Kunming-Montreal agreement and the International Panel of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

In this Module the students will explore the following questions:

  • What is the global biodiversity challenge?
  • What are the causes of decline in biological diversity?
  • What are the main policy goals and targets for halting biological diversity loss?
